What will I experience when I have my baby using HypnoBirthing®?
When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.
You will be conversant and in good spirits – totally relaxed, but fully in control. You will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.
How Can the Pain of Labour Be Psychological?
Fear stimulates the production of adrenaline; adrenaline in turn directs the blood flow to the major muscle groups and away from the uterus. Pain is created when the uterus gets insufficient blood flow and oxygen. To remove fear is to remove pain. In HypnoBirthing® you will be taught to work with nature, not against it, in a calm and fearless state of mind.
If I Learn HypnoBirthing® Am I Guaranteed a Pain Free Labour?
70-80% of HypnoBirthing® mums give birth and feel comfortable enough that they have no need for pain relief at all. A further 10-15% only use milder forms of pain relief. One thing is for sure though, even if you do require some form of pharmaceutical pain relief, your birth will definitely be calmer and more positive!
Can Anybody Do It?
Yes! With time, patience and practice HypnoBirthing® will work for anyone. Some may find they are more susceptible and may find that the effects are much stronger for them, but HypnoBirthing® can benefit anyone!
When Should I start?
The earlier in your pregnancy the better, and the HypnoBirthing® Institute recommends starting the course in your Second Trimester, as you can only benefit from the increased time to practice before birth. However, if you are already in your third trimester this is still okay – you will just need to practice more often! Essentially, the more time you have to practice the methods the better as there is quite a lot to cover.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration – a state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make.
There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus. Find out what is Hypnosis.
Will I Still Be In Control?
Yes! Lots of people worry that HypnoBirthing® will be similar to stage hypnosis or that seen on TV where people are made to impersonate chickens and the like. The fact of the matter is, with HypnoBirthing® you are in complete control, nobody can make you do anything you do not want to do and you will remain lucid throughout the whole of your birth experience, just very very calm.
Will It Still Benefit Me If I Have A Medically Necessary Induction or Caesarean Section?
Yes! HypnoBirthing® isn’t just about natural, drug-free, vaginal births, it can be used for any type of birth experience! It is wonderful at helping prepare you for the birth itself, but the benefits do not end there. HypnoBirthing® can help you experience a happier, more relaxed pregnancy; will help with bonding with the baby, with breastfeeding and with life after the birth.
I had a Caesarean section for my previous birth; can I use HypnoBirthing to try for a VBAC?
Certainly. Using HypnoBirthing® can significantly improve the chances of a successful VBAC because the birthing process is so much gentler and does not use forced pushing.
Does My Partner Have to Come Too?
Ideally your partner will come with you. HypnoBirthing® is designed to be taught to couples, although this could also be a female friend or relative. If you have already hired a professional labour companion, known as a doula, she is welcome attend the class with you at no extra charge. Find out more information for dads.
